The brief

The owners had bought a house with a large, neglected wooded plot. They wanted to be able to walk through it, have water to look at, and give the children space to explore.

The challenge

Mature trees and their roots, clay-with-flints ground that held water all winter, and narrow access for machinery between the trees.

What we did

We cleared the undergrowth in stages, placed a natural pond at the lowest point to collect the water, and laid paths that follow the contours so they never feel steep. Existing trees were protected throughout and new native planting fills the gaps.
