Garden design and build in Berkhamsted
Our home town. Gardens behind Victorian terraces in the centre, and larger plots out towards Ashridge and the villages.

Berkhamsted gardens are rarely flat. Many fall steeply away from the house towards the canal or up the valley side, which makes levels, steps and drainage the first thing to get right. Town-centre gardens tend to be long and narrow, with access through the house or a side passage, so every job is planned around how materials get in and out.
Further out, in Northchurch, Potten End, Little Gaddesden and Aldbury, plots are bigger and the brief is often about making a larger garden work as a series of spaces: a terrace by the house, a lawn, borders, and quieter areas further away.
What matters when building in Berkhamsted
Conservation areas
Parts of the town centre and several of the villages are conservation areas. That can affect front walls, gates, driveways and some garden buildings, so we check before anything is designed.
Slopes and drainage
Many gardens slope towards the canal and the valley floor. Retaining walls, steps and land drains are part of most jobs here.
Changing soils
The ground can change from chalk to heavy clay with flints within a single street, so planting is chosen plot by plot.

Questions
Do you work in Berkhamsted town centre?
Yes. Many of our gardens are behind terraced and semi-detached houses in the centre, where we plan access through side passages or the house itself.
Do I need permission for a new front wall or driveway in Berkhamsted?
It depends on the height of the wall, the size of the driveway and whether the house is in a conservation area. We check this at the design stage and design to avoid needing permission where we can.
