A town courtyard in Berkhamsted, finished

A town courtyard

A narrow, neglected yard behind a town house, rebuilt as one paved room with planting, lighting and a place to eat.

Berkhamsted

The brief

A side return and yard that had become a store for bins. The owners wanted somewhere to eat outside and something good to look at from the kitchen.

The challenge

Everything in and out through the house, little direct sun, and neighbours close on three sides.

What we did

One continuous paved surface makes the space feel larger. Shade-tolerant planting in raised beds softens the walls, and low lighting means it works as an outdoor room after dark.
